Jasprit Bumrah immediately commanded attention upon entering the Edgbaston Cricket Ground nets. The Indian pace spearhead wasted no time, launching into an intense spell of fast bowling.
After a brief warm-up, Bumrah marked his run-up and unleashed a 20-minute burst, bowling to Sai Sudharsan, Ravindra Jadeja, and Karun Nair, with Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Rishabh Pant absent from Saturday's session.
Bumrah challenged the batters with varied angles and accuracy. He appeared physically and mentally fresh, benefiting from a three-day break before joining Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna.
The trio, who played in the Headingley Test, initially rested on Friday but trained purposefully on Saturday, each bowling for approximately 30 minutes before batting in the nets.
Siraj practiced leaves, ducks, and forward defense with batting coach Sitanshu Kotak, while Bumrah explored various bowling styles, from side-arm deliveries to slow bowling. He also engaged in shadow practice while awaiting his turn to bat, demonstrating growing confidence throughout the session.
Business continued as usual in the other nets, with Ravindra Jadeja focusing on his batting and Arshdeep Singh and Akash Deep striving to impress. Kuldeep Yadav dedicated himself to both batting and bowling, aiming to seize every opportunity.
While Akash's or Arshdeep’s inclusion hinges on Bumrah's availability, Kuldeep is leaving no stone unturned in his preparation.
The left-arm wrist-spinner actively sought feedback from support staff and teammates. He experimented with different angles and lengths. Birmingham's dry weather conditions could favor his selection for the second Test next week.
Kuldeep's physical condition appears excellent, and his bowling rhythm has been consistent since the pre-series sessions in Leeds. He engaged in a compelling contest with Gill before the first Test and has continued his battles with Indian batters in Birmingham.
Kuldeep has also dedicated extensive time to honing his batting skills under head coach Gautam Gambhir and batting coach Sitanshu Kotak. Over the past 18 months, he has worked diligently to improve his batting and contribute meaningfully to the team with the bat.
Following two days of intense practice, the team will take a break before regrouping on June 30. The bowlers will have an opportunity to rest, while bowling coach Morne Morkel can resume his playful wrestling sessions with Arshdeep and Akash Deep at the team hotel. As for Bumrah's situation, the suspense will continue for at least the next 48 hours.
